Joy Moir (MSc)

I learned about deforestation some 30 years ago, then about how Aborigines live in balance with their natural environment a few years later. I was perturbed by the need to cut nature down with no thought of consequence, and then the beauty of living alongside nature to use and reuse everything extremely consciously. Looking back, I see my commercial knowledge was in its infancy, but my appreciation of how we are all deeply connected with nature and each other was born, and has become more central to my values as my life has progressed.

Both experiences had a profound effect on me, leaving me to ponder and wonder how we make the decisions we do, especially in today’s developed western societies.

Those two experiences didn’t change my life course but stayed with me as I considered what being a good citizen looked like. Which in turn led to, what does good business and good living look like? What makes a good decision? What things do we really consider when we make such critical changes?

For 20 years, my professional life centred within the UK energy industry, whereby I worked my way around and up the corporate management structure through customer service, emergency management to project change, people development and everything in between. I grew an extensive case base and understanding about energy, decarbonisation, business performance, strategy design and decision making in simple and complex organisations. This experience led me to appreciate what is needed to implement good business/organisational decision-making.

I became one of the first Sustainable Business Managers for a large UK energy organisation (with 6 million customers) back in 2008 and my future career took shape. I also gained a Masters in Sustainability and Responsibility in 2016.

It was becoming more evident to me that the decisions a business takes has more than financial impacts… there are social, cultural, and of course environmental impacts, but back then, financial and some social impact were all businesses cared about. The more I collaborated with senior managers and their teams, the more the benefits of a holistic approach became apparent.

Today, I have been successfully working in the Sustainable Business space for over 12 years and have collected a wealth of knowledge and experience. Since arriving in New Zealand I have been fortunate to learn about the Māori worldview through collaborative projects. I find myself more committed than ever to supporting, engaging, and empowering businesses, to take a different lens to their operations.
